Now Play Quake II on your browser with WebGL and HTML5

HTML5 doesn't seem to have any limits. Earlier, playing videos on your browser without flash was unimaginable, but now, you can even play Quake II level games on it. The game I am talking about is GWTQuake, a Quake II port to use HTML5 and WebGL. It uses WebGL, HTML5 Canvas and audio to make it possible.

Majority of the code is based upon WebGL rendering on HTML5 canvas. WebGL is a standard, providing JavaScript APIs to enable hardware accelerated 3D graphics in web applications. Since, this technology is still in-development phase, introduced last August, the code is only possible to run on two browsers

  • Chromium, open-source variant of Chrome.
  • Safari's development version, Webkit.app

The code makes use of Jake2, a java-based variant of Quake II, HTML5  audio, canvas and Local Storage, web sockets to provide an online multiplayer gaming environment. The Javascript code of the game was obtained by means of translation from Jake2 after translation, which is handled by Google Web Toolkit (GWT).

The game is capable of running at 60fps, trying to make it like a real gaming environment. Here is a small video showing the game.

GWTQuake has started a new wave of web based gaming using WebGL and HTML5 technologies. Imagine the day linuxers, when you will be managing games on your browser tabs, simply amazing . Time to say bye-bye to traditional Flash games. GWTQuake will serve as a brilliant example for web developers to get over the problems they face while developing full-screen web gaming apps for browser. You can find more about it on the Project's website.
