EiskaltDC - a Direct Connect (DC) client for Linux
Direct connect is a nice way of file sharing. It is used in almost all the places with a lot of data and people - universities, offices etc. And like most of the Linux users, I have always been using linuxdcpp, which is fine but this should not be the only one for Linux. So, in a quest for a better Direct connect (DC) client for Linux I came across EiskaltDC.
EiskaltDC is not completely out of the box, its similar to linuxdcpp but provides you with a bit more pre-configuration which otherwise had to be manually done in linuxdcpp e.g. option to automatically look for alternate TTHs etc. It is compatible with most of the other clients - original DC by Neomodus, DC++ and its derivatives and works well with all common DC hub softwares.
One of the good things about EiskaltDC is the flexibility it provides for manipulating GUI according to your needs. It gives you 7 different themes to choose from, you can even go for a sidebar instead of a tool bar.
There are a couple of things that I didn't like in EiskaltDC.
- The inclusion of tabs in the same toolbar row. I am not sure if there exists an option but I would love to see the tabs bar below the main toolbar.
- It would be great if I could find a way to replace the left double click on a user to open his shared files rather than to include his name in main chat(the default action).
Overall, EiskaltDC is pretty cool. If you want to try out something new, give it a try.
Install EiskaltDC
I am not sure about other Distros but there is a PPA available for Ubuntu. Here is the tehnick's PPA, just follow the simple steps mentioned here- how to install software in ubuntu from PPA and enjoy the new EiskaltDC. Other's may have to install it from the source. If there are rpms available do let me know, just leave a comment.
So, this is the first in the series. Yes, I will look for some more, try them out and write about them. In the meantime, it would be great if you people could share your choice

". Even though the guy is really nice but as you can see these accidental shutdowns or reboots can cause a lot of trouble :P. Well
