Brainstorm: Option for codecs installation at first boot in Ubuntu

Check out this new idea at brainstorm, "Ubuntu should provide an option to install various audio/video codecs at first boot, similar to Kubuntu". Actually when you open Konqueror or Amarok for the first time in Kubuntu, you are asked to select which codecs would you like to install for multimedia apps. The idea is to implement a similar feature in Ubuntu.

Athough you might remember something similar to this when you first try to run a video or song in Totem. Since, totem doesn't have those codecs at first, it searches for them and then provides an option to install them. But this feature only looks for the concerned codecs at that time, so the next time you try to play another restricted format, you will be prompted to install another set of codecs. This feature is available in Totem and Rhythmbox.

Dragon76 suggested in his idea to implement a feature in ubuntu which will ask for the installation of all such codecs. So, you probably won't have to deal with any codecs installation later. Here is a screenshot of a similar feature in Kubuntu.

Another related idea is to include a "What's  next" icon on the desktop. This will guide the user to install codecs, java, medibuntu, flash etc. This indeed will be of a great help for the new user.

Since, Ubuntu Developers are already thinking of making the 3rd party stuff easily available to the users, this idea could be a pretty good start. Don't forget to share your views as comments.
